Tribute Mix - Luke Vibert

Theres so many sides to the music of Luke Vibert.

From his Drum & Bass inspired Plug alias, to disco tinged Kerrier District, to collaborations with steel slide guitarist B.J Cole, the mentalism of Amen Andrews, Spac Hand Luke, Wagon Christ and more - an electronic pick'n'mix with something for everyone born this side of 1970.

I get a real feel that Vibert really enjoys what he does and a sense of humour and playfulness is often present in his music which more often than not has me dancing stupidly about my apartment or just laughing. His penchant for odd vocal snippets and off-kilter noises ensures something different to more serious musicians. That said his contribution to electronic music is serious, spanning decades and dozens of albums. And tracks such as "Sci Fi Starircase" and others show a deeper, more serious side.

Tribute Mix - Richie Hawtin

A true pioneer of electronic music, Richie Hawtin, under his moniker of Plastikman, carved out a place in history with his own brand of techno. Forward thinking, he did minimal before it was popular, spearheading the creation of the sub-genre amongst more cacophonous and popular styles.

I think his music is most powerful when it's most minimal. Honestly its sometimes so good it fucking hurts me.

Go searching through the freezer for that last hit of acid, sit back, relax and tune out to the bleeps and clicks of the wicked Plastikman.

Plaid require no introduction. They stand tall among the giants of electronic music and in my opinion are almost unrivaled in their ability to marry complexity, beauty, diversity and cinematic qualities in their compositions. This mix showcases works from near the beginning of their career to the present, and includes a few aliases.

Tribute Mix - The Future Sound of London

You can thank the Japanese ancestor-worship Obon festival for two quickfire tribute mixes this weekend.

The Future Sound of London are well known for the seminal "Papua New Guinea" (and the lesser known "We Have Explosive") but that's just a commercial high water mark for the duo. Aside from those they have an extensive back catalogue of exquisite dreamy, sinister, dubby or straight-out dancey electronic music that most people haven't yet heard.

There was a couple of tunes I kept returning to as themes during this mix and fans will recognise them. For everyone else, lie back, relax and think of Future Sound of London.

Tribute Mix - Aphex Twin

Aphex Twin has tried his hand at a lot of styles within the realm of electronic music, and I tried to pick examples of his music for this mix that conform as close as possible to "melodic", "danceable" and "not too fucked up". I tried. But the'res still some moments of uncomfortable listening here which comes as no surprise to me since the bulk of his work is, while not without a sense of humour, certainly tainted by a unique darkness that is possibly over-represented here. Even his ambient works (which are used in this mix to book-end clumps of Aphex waffle) while beautiful are full of darkness.

But I don't feel this mix is gloomy. There's plenty of light, whimsical moments inside the ride.

Autechre - It took me over ten years to learn how to say it properly. At least I think I know how to say it properly.

But it took a lot less to know that their music was special. Although they've drifted into uncompromising, almost unwavering avante-garde experimentation that I can no longer follow, the first 10 or so years of LPs and EPs produced so many beautiful, melodical, mechanical, uncomfortable, electronical musical pearls that all I can do is feel thankful that they ever existed. And they still produce the odd accessable and/or beautiful track, a couple of which are included in the mix.

Tribute Mix - Spring Heel Jack

This is the 1st in a series of mixes to various artists I can be arsed to tribute because they stand above the rest.

John Coxon and Ashley Wales as Spring Heel Jack produced a really distinctive brand of electronic-centric music in the mid 90s through to the mid 2000s. Although I primarily knew them through their forays into Drum & Bass they also made really superb music of lower tempos. Always melodic, often dubby and avante garde - they never sold out. They merely moved on into musical territories that I am yet to discover or appreciate. Due to the extent of my appreciation for their output I'm really sorry I fucked up this mix a couple of times. Hopefully the music saves the day.
